I was there in '65. What a difference a year makes? '65 I went to Lindholme; another Varsity flight! There were Hastings there too but they had been grounded as well.

My last sight of a Valiant was WZ383 at Boscombe on 21 April '65. Also present was Varsity WL684. During a visit to Brooklands on 6 March '65 I noted Valiant WZ367. TSR 2 was in production at the time, the workshop was strictly off limits, no peeping, security people very obvious. A month later it was scrapped. Pricey eh?!

Strange co-incidence but I did a school vist to Brooklands/Weybridge in '65 too. Didn't see any Valiants, but VC10s were being churned out by milling huge sheets of alloy to form wing panels which were then shot blasted to form the correct aerofoil section. Afterwards it was 'discovered' that one of our number had 'accidentally' slipped a small offcut (about 10" x 10") in his bag where it was placed on display in our school. We had a keen photographer amongst our number and despite my protests, he insisted on taking a camera with him but of course at the gate, a security man came onto our coach and asked straight away 'any cameras here' so his camera was impounded during our visit.

I remember my visit in March '65 well - I had visited before with the ATC. It was the year before my O levels! It must have been the year of your O Levels, unless you took them early. I was escorted (obviously survived) round the VC10 production shops. Present were Super VC10s SSD/SGJ and VC10s 9G-ABP and ABQ (not allocated, became BUA TDJ). A VC10-1106 was also present which became XR809. A visit to Wisely on 16 July 1964 revealed BUA BAC 1-11 SJF and Super VC10 SGA. I knew my logs would come in handy one day. Only 60 years ago chevvron!

Wouldn't be fab if EGLK became an arrivals base for EGLF Airshow visitors again. Perhaps, in a couple of years, EGLK will have maintenance facilities and hangars. A ferry fleet of cars could be on hand to transfer VIPs et al over the M3; better still: electrically driven air taxis, of the hover variety, to land at an EGLF designated area.
The possibilities are boundless, the returns potentially exponential when extrapolated to other events, not necessarily those at EGLF.
What happened to our erstwhile SoS for Transport's plan in regard to the future of GA airfields? It's a mystery, as Toyah would say!

In (I think) 1972, (the only show I missed between 1960 and 2008 as I was required in the Shetlands, rather a long way to commute) there was a scheme where Farnborough visitors could land at Farnborough but not park there, the aircraft would then re-position to Blackbushe.
