The Handley Page HP.67 Hastings:
Designed for use by the RAF as a troop carrier and freighter the Handley Page Hastings was a great success. This four Bristol Hercules 101 engined all metal, low wing monoplane was designed to meet Air Staff Specification C.3/44 as a replacement for the Avro York long range transport aircraft. Having a circular fuselage it was suitable for pressurisation up to 5.5psi and was equipped with a retractable main undercarriage and tail wheel.
Suitable for a wide variety of tasks and operated by a crew of five it could carry up to 50 fully equipped troops or 30 paratroops, or alternatively 32 stretchers and 28 sitting casualties.
The first of the two prototypes flew for the first time on 7th May 1946 at RAF Wittering but needed urgent modification to resolve stall and lateral instability problems before it could be introduced into service in September/October 1948.
Of the initial order for 100 Hasting C.1 aircraft the last six were built as Hastings Met Mk.1s for weather reconnaissance purposes with seven earlier airframes being modified for the same reason. A further eight of these earlier airframes were modified to become Hasting T5 trainers which were used for training V bomber crews.
The C Mk.2 model was the result of modifications to the earlier C.1s including an extended span lower mounted tail plane to improve stability and additional fuel tanks fitted in the outer wings.
Finally a VIP transport with yet more fuel capacity for improved range was designed and designated the C Mk.4.
There were in all 147 Hastings built including 4x C.3s which joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
Operations:
Having been rushed into service due to the need for additional capacity on the Berlin Airlift, 47 Sqn operated it's first flight there on 11th November 1948 to be followed by a further 31 aircraft of the type mainly delivering coal before their final sortie on 6th October 1949. 55,000 tons of supplies were delivered for the loss of two aircraft during this period.
During the Suez crisis some of the 141 C.1s and C.2s were deployed to drop paratroopers on El Gamil airfield.
Transport support was continued throughout the world through the 1950s and 60s including supply drops to troops in Malaysia during the Indonesian confrontation.
The Met Mk.1 saw service with 202Sqn when based at RAF Aldergrove in Northern Ireland from 1950 to 1964 when the sqn was disbanded due to the introduction of weather satellites.
The T.5s were used as radar trainers until well into the 1970s and additionally were used for reconnaissance purposes during the Icelandic cod wars during the winter of 1975/1976.
The Hastings was finally retired on 30th June 1977 after nearly 30 years service.
The only other Hastings operator was the Royal New Zealand Air Force. 40 Squadron had four Hastings C.3 transport aircraft on strength until the crash of one of the aircraft caused great damage when it crashed at RAAF base Darwin causing the disruption of the city railway, the main road into the city and the failure of the main water supply. The other three aircraft were retired and soon broken up.
Variants:
HP67 Hastings Prototypes, two built.
C1 Production aircraft, 94 built, some converted to C.1A and T.5.
4x Bristol Hercules 101 engines
C.1A C1 built to C2 standard
C.2 Improved version with tailplane modifications, extra fuel and 4x Bristol Hercules 106 engines
43 built and C.1s modified to this standard as C.1As.
HP95 C.3 Transport aircraft for RNZAF. Similar to C.2 but with Bristol Hercules 737 engines which
had lubrication problems.
HP94 C.4 VIP transport for four VIP's and staff. Only 4 built
HP67 T.5 Eight C.1s converted to RAF Bomber Command requirements for V bomber crew
navigation bombing system (NBS) training. Were fitted with ventral radome.
