Just one from me today as its quite busy. I purchased this shot from ebay a year or so ago and then couldn't find it. It is an official handley Page shot of Herald G-AODF departing on a tour of India, Pakistan,Iran and Turkey and is dated 10/4/59. The photo was probably taken 4/4/59 when ODF departed for Le Touquet. must do the hoovering before the Mrs gets home!

In Peters absence I will try and keep posting some photos, although lacking in Peters eloquent text! Thought I would post some of the jets that have visited Blackbushe. Not the sort of 'hair dryer' jets we now get but real kerosene burning and turning jets before the green lobby was even thought of. Amazingly Blackbushe could take any aircraft in service in 1960 apart from the a fully loaded 707 and the B-52,B-47 etc. Of course as we see at Lasham (same runway length as old Blackbushe) A320's, 737,757's could have been operated effortlessly from here. 12589 Canadair CT-33 from the Canadian 1st Air Division pared on the 01 stub 12/10/57. These were used as fast comms aircraft well into the 1990 wheil the RCAF was still in Germany.
Rare to see camouflaged Vampire T11's, here is WZ518 from 14 squadron seen 5-6/9/56, this is now preserved in Sunderland. It looks to be parked on the grass pointing towards the A30 The 9th September saw no less than 16 Meteor NF14 arrive from 264 squadron Linton-on-Ouse, here are just a few of them Finally WT318 Canberra B(I)6 rests within touching distance of the A30 10-11/9/59

What are wet Sunday mornings for but for a wallowing in Blackbushe nostalga. Once the book is finished I will add more, plus I have my dads collection from the 70's and 80's to go through. 37311 Lockheed P2V Harpoon seen here 8/9/59, the last Farnborough week of the era. These were then in second line service , in this case with 11-S based as Les Mureaux. 4X-FAK Dakota of the Israeli Air Force rests outside the Eagle hangar in January 1958, note the 3 ADF aerials, this was converted into a navigation trainer with eagles installing the extra radio kit. X7341 DH89 Dominie seen in september 1956, unable to find any history on this and it did not become civil. Presumably from a RN station flight? 6601 Douglas C-54 of the Portuguese Air Force parked on the 01 stub by the A30. This aircraft visited about a dozen times between 1956-59. The aircraft ditched off Las Palmas in 1963 finally N98G Convair 440 of Gulf Oil on its sole visit 2/5/59, this was the Gulfstream of its day! Still flying in New Zealand as ZK-CIE

Long time since I have posted any of these but to being busy, time to make amends. G-AKPE Miles 'Maggie' Magister/Hawk Trainer Mk3, the humble Maggie was the first aircraft to arrive on the hallowed turf of Hartford Bridge Flats. This example visited in September 1956 owned by derby Airways G-AKDG Miles Gemini one of the great designs from the sadly short lived Miles company. This one was WFU in 1961. A great view of the end of the terminal, might be some of our 'vintage 'members pictured here? seen 19/4/58 G-AMBS Percival Proctor rests in the Airwork area. The company used Proctors as part of their training schools as well as chartering them out, seen here July 57 G-APXK Piaggio 166 this Italian beauty was delivered through Blackbushe non the evening of 19/5/60, days before this perfectly serviceable airport was destroyed for all time, so they though! Finally those horrible modern aircraft LOL! G-APXY Cessna 150 delivered to Airwork new in March 1960 it lasted to 2007 when it was w/o at Compton Abbas. Airwork were the first UK cessna agent. Anybody know the purpose of the woodern building in the background?

Hi Peter. I've only just noticed the pic of N98G earlier in the thread. Here it was in March 2007 at Palmerston North as ZK-CIE. It had been one of Chatham Island Airways small fleet but I believe the airline went bust. It's sister aircraft ZK-CID was nearby being dismantled and I guess 'CIE has met the same end. Great shame.

Have reciently found some photos I did not know I had so though I would share some. Here are a couple of Handley Page Hermes of Britavia. Amazingly even though the Hermes only just had the range to reach the North African coast or, Cyprus at a push, it made it as far as the likes of Fiji and Singapore, with many stops. Here G-ALDI rests on the south side c1956,. G-ALDJ seen c1957 possibly around the time the company lost the trooping contract and they went over to flying charters to the med. Note the change of title on the hangar, this happened around 1957. By the end of 1958 the Hermes's had departed to Manston and Silver City/Britavia's 11 year tenure was over. I am still without a scanner so further photos will have to wait unil I am cash rich again! Rob

You don't need an expensive scanner... If you have a digi camera just take a picture of the photograph...

Now the photos for 'the book' have been almost decided on I can share those that will not make it into print. Its quite staggering that I have around 500 photos of Blackbushe from the 47-60 era, and I was not even born! The first batch come from the good old USN. 23760 Beech SNB-5 based with FASRON 200 from late 58 to closure in 1960, seen here outside the USN hangar. This aircraft was the one that was landed wheels up 24/11/59 by a desk pilot from HQ! 39124 Doundlas R5D-3 of VR-24, they ran the three times weekly service round the Navy's European bases from Port Lyautey. 39124 visted during 1959-60 56538 Douglas R5D-3 again from VR-24 this time parked on the main ramp for customs paperwork before going northside for unloading of freight and pax.56538 visted 1956-58 56526 Douglas R5D-3 was a long way from Jacksonville, Florida in May 1959. USAF interloper 56-0492 C-130A parked on the USN ramp. One of 6 C-130's to visit this was on 4/8/58 and the aircraft came from the 463rd troop carrier wind in Oklahoma City, This aircraft was w/o in 1964
