This list illustrates Blackbushe's 'bread and butter' of the 50's . Some RAF visitors using the airport as a convenient pick up/drop off point for the home of the British Army. Training flights using the top class facilities on offer in the days before flight sims. Plus charter flights, cargo and passenger from/to the likes of malta and Afghanistan! rob

Here are some jotting from this day in history. Not surprisingly I have less notes from the winter than the summer. By co-incidence the entry for G-AJAZ and G-APDW come from the same pilots log book 10 years apart. The late Brian Powell was Westminsters chief pilot from day one and later became Lord Beaverbrooks personal Dak captain on his trips around the world. After Westminsters demise Brian became a test pilot for Airspeed then Vickers . He finished the 50's with Hunting Clan as Chief pilot. Hunting Clan had a contract with Vickers to train customer pilots on the Viscount. Much of that job entailed bashing the Blackbushe circuit in various Viscounts, on this occasion it was Eagles first example flying as a check pilot. Brian retired as BCAL chief pilot and passed away a couple of years ago. Thankfully he lent me his log books to copy, a true gentlemen.

today's installment brought to you from my sick bed! Although at this time in 1947 Blackbushe had been a Civil airport for just over a week it will take a further five weeks for it to become operational. They had proper winters back then and 1947 would be one of the worse of them. January is clearly not a popular month for spotters logging. However one such log exists from this day in 1957 and this shows just how much variety that was on view at Blackbushe. From 'war surplus' Lancaster and Harvards to Brand new Viscounts on delivery this place really did have it all!

How rich was the variety in those days, surely the best post war period to be an aircraft enthusiast. Thanks for sharing Rob.

A real mixed bag from the 9th of January over the years. The Danish C-47's were a regular visitor through the 1950's. Several different people have mentioned that they often picked up antique furniture. This remains one of those Blackbushe mysteries.

Here more from the frozen depths of January's past. Any winter photographs from that era at Blackbushe will show what a desolate place it could be in winter. No pleasant, tee lined, A30 in those days. Being on a plateau there is little horizon at Blackbushe, apart from trees, making for a bleak winter outlook. Today's log is a mixed bag. More Lincoln's for Argentina. A log from 1955 including the sad evidence of a December 1954 night that BEA training Captains would choose to forget! Even with only a couple of months of life left the good old USN provided a R5D from sunny California.
