THE FAIRCHILD C82 PACKET.
The C82 Packet was built by Fairchild between 1945 and 1948 and was operated by the United States Air Force Tactical Air Command and the Military Air Transport Service for almost nine years. The design, however had several serious problems which were all addressed in the design of the Fairchild C-119B Flying Boxcar.
Few of the wartime era Fairchild C82 Packets are recorded as visiting Blackbushe, however the Fairchild C-119 and US Navy / Marines version the R4Q- were seen more often.

To overcome the problems being experienced with the C82 Packet, Fairchild designed the C-119 / R4Q- series of twin boomed transport aircraft with more powerful engines and a strengthened fuselage to accommodate cargo, personnel and for medical litter patients with medical staff in addition to mechanised equipment. It was also utilized to drop troops and cargo by parachute and was first flown in mid November 1947 before being introduced for military service in December 1949. There were 1183 built in total and they were used by many military operators until the last one was retired by the Republic of China Air Force in 1995.
Seventy-one C-119F airframes (51-8098 - 51-8168) were built by Henry J Kaiser, at Willow Run Airport, Belleville, Michigan against Fairchild's wishes and were equipped with different engines. Most of these aircraft were delivered as R4Q's to the US Marine Corps ( several being noted at Blackbushe ). However, several ended up with the South Vietnamese Air Force in the 1970s.
There were several different models of the aircraft including 55 C-119B, 303 C-119C with dorsal fins added and tailplane extensions removed, 256 C-119F production variants for USAF and the RCAF, 480 C-119F converted with different propellers and 26 C119G modified as gunships. In addition conversions such as 6 aircraft known as the C-119K were modified with General Electric J85 under-wing turbojets. 26 aircraft were modified as the gunship AC-119K and 22 C-119L were modified from C-119Gs.
There were also 39 R4Q-!'s which were US Navy and Marine Corps versions of the C119C and 58 R4Q-2's which were later designated as C-119F. My apologies if this all is a bit difficult to follow!
For civilian use there was the Steward - Davis Jet-pack C-119 with 3400lbf (15Kn) Westinghouse J34-WE-36 dorsal jet pods giving an increased take-off weight of 77,000lb (35000 kg). There were 29 jet packs supplied for civil use in addition to 27 for the Indian Air Force which operated 79 aircraft. Finally there was one STOLmaster conversion with quick - attachment J34 jet packs which was converted in 1967.
