There is mention elsewhere today (5.9.16) of filming taking place at the airfield. Though non aircraft related it may be of interest that scenes from the 1968 film "Girl on a motorcycle" staring a leather clad Marianne Faithfull were filmed on the north-west perimeter track. The airfield I recall, supplied a fire-tender to extinguish a fire caused when Marianne hit a car which burst into flames during the major crash scene. The film company props department were not too happy that when called upon to rush into the car concerned and extinguish it once the shot was complete, the fire crew were unable to engage the fire-tender water pump - so no water!!! Very embarrassing as they wanted to reuse the car for retakes. There is a trailer/clip available to view if you Google the film name which shows good shots of the peri track and Marianne but not the actual crash scene. Stuart.

Just found this site. I was on ground control at the time of the filming and was the actual driver of the fire engine. In actual fact we went to put out the fire when they were still filming so they had to repaint the car and reshoot the scene. This time with one of the film crew in the cab with us. The second time we ran out of water! Well if you put a nineteen year old in charge of driving a fire engine what do you expect. But used to have fun chasing trespassers off the field with that fire engine and the bell ringing.
On a second occasion the fire engine refused to start on a practice shout so aThree Counties instructor thought it a joke to call out the AA for us so we sprayed them with water. AVM Bennet's clapped out machinery. I seem to remember that I got my own back on said instructor by insisting that he and his pupil get out of the aircraft whilst I refuelled it at a later date.
