Can anyone point me in the direction of a photo of an aircraft actually crossing the A30 ?
[ on our Blackbushe bacon sarnie stop en route to/from Farnborough one of the elders of the group will invariably regale us with "back in the day things used to taxy across this road....." it has become something of a joke (together with the other strand which is deckchairs at London Airport) and looking to make up a relevant birthday card ]
thanks Stephen Rudge

Hello Stephen, Pictures of aircraft crossing the A30 are somewhat difficult to find, however, if you look back in Picture of the Day, page 34, and scroll through you will come across a photograph of G-APID a DC4 of Independent Airlines being towed across. I recall seeing this particular aircraft often crossing the road to reach it's parking area on the south side of the airfield. All aircraft kept on the south side, and there were quite a number, were towed across to/from the apron before and after a flight and it wasn't unusual to have the A30 closed for a few moments for this to happen. Peter Brown who writes POTD may be able to find others in his collection. Only during WW11 did aircraft cross the road under their own power and that's quite a different story. Stuart.

Various photos in the 'vaults' of aircraft being towed toward the A30 crossing, not sure if we have any of an aeroplane actually making the transit. I'll take a look, hopefully someone 'out there' may have exactly what you seek?

OK, a sortie into the vaults just for you... Home based DC-4 waits to cross from north to south...Another home based transits to Blackbushe 'south' under tow. In peace time no aircraft crossed the A30 under their own power. During the war one hears different stories..you had to watch the rear view mirror occasionally....or so the story goes?Best I can do for now..hope it helps? Regards Peter B
