THE VICKERS VIKING
It was on 22nd June 1945 that 'Mutt' Summers, the Vickers test pilot, eased the first prototype Vickers Viking into the air. The British Government with some forethought had decided that a post war civilian airliner would be required and had issued the specification 17/44, in October 1944. This had resulted in the Type 491 VC1, being given the name Viking, and initially three prototypes were ordered by the Ministry of Supply and Aircraft Production (MoS) which were registered with joint civil and military serials. Construction numbers commenced at 101 with the following allocation: c/n 101 G-AGOK/TT194, c/n 102 G-AGOL/TT197 and c/n 103 G-AGOM/TT181. It was G-AGOK that had first flown in June 45. Much development flying was carried out with these three aircraft but unfortunately G-AGOK was lost in April 46 when a double engine failure caused a forced landing. The aircraft was written off but the crew were uninjured. A production order for 50 aircraft was placed on 5th April 1946 by the Ministry of Aircraft Production and a Certificate of Airworthiness ( CofA ) soon followed on the 24th of the month. C/n 104 G-AGON was designated as the first production aircraft.
For the purpose of this history of Vikings visiting Blackbushe I have listed aircraft in c/n order, with the first registration following, then the aircraft history followed by details of sightings at Blackbushe Airport. I have also included the aircraft model(s), which may be of interest to others who read this. Details of the different models, (types and variants) can be found at the end after the final listing. Only aircraft known to have been at the airfield have been listed. I have shown names allocated to aircraft when in service with British European Airways Corporation, but for reasons of space I have not continued to list all subsequent names carried on the aircraft by operators. It should be noted that where dates are shown as a block (for instance 1.2.56 - 4.5. 56) it indicates individual sightings were made between these dates, and not that the aircraft was necessarily at the airfield all that time.
