A blog-page I follow called a 'A London Inheritance ' this week features the late 1950s plan to build a new town at Hook...it met with fierce local opposition....in November 1958 the local newspaper carried the opinion that 'it was criminal to put 60,000 people on the fringe of Britain’s third ranking airport' !! So Blackbushe did Hook a favour back then!! alondoninheritance.com/out-of-london/hook-new-town-a-london-county-council-plan/

What would HCC do? Help! Thanks to it's location EGLK remained friendly and, in a tenuous sense, kept HCC solvent!

If Blackbushe was ranking 3rd in the UK (aircraft movements?)and, no doubt, L.A.P (Heathrow ) was 1st, which airport was number 2 in 1958? ( The rebuilt Gatwick's 1st complete year was 1959)

( The rebuilt Gatwick's 1st complete year was 1959) In 1952 Croydon was destined for closure by the end of the decade (closed 1959). During the decade Croydon's European traffic moved to Northolt. No doubt there are a few on the forum who could assist further.

I have a suepicion that Silver City's Ferryfield (Lydd) might have been ' in the top 3' in the late 1950s but since Flight magazine was removed from the Internet can't prove it.

Northolt was the busiest airport in the UK around 1949 but declined sharply when BEA were evicted late 1954

From offical figuers in 1958 London Airport 129497 movements 3.5 mil pax Croydon 64656 movements 27,081 pax Blackbushe 30023 movements 204,590 pax Gatwick (open about april IIRC) 11260 movements 186,255 pax In comparason Blackbushe handled more pax than Birmingham, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Liverpool.
On the Hook new town I have read in the archives that Blackbushe had an effect of the possible development. Of course the airports closure announcement in 59 was a big shock for all. In 58 Blackbushe had the runway resurfaced, new tower, extended terminal, new lighting etc. There were also still ative plans to realign and extend the runway and divert the A30 to the south. However it all came to naught.
