Hello gentlemen and ladies. I need your help. I was a very young child at the time, but I had my first ever flight in an aircraft at a blackbushe airshow in (I think) the late 60s. It was in a blue and white Piper Tri-Pacer. The only other thing I can remember now from the day, was that the Red Pelicans Jet Provost display team was there. It was also a very sunny day. I am trying to find out what the Tri-Pacer's registration was. My mum sat in the front next to the pilot, and my brother and I sat in the back. I was so small that we could not see out unless the aircraft was in a banked turn. If anyone has a photo of the aircraft that would be a huge bonus. I have just perchanced a 1/4 scale rc model of a Tri-Pacer, new still in the box, and would love to finish my model ad the very first aircraft I ever flew in.
Please help me if you can.
Gordon Fraser.

Hello Gordon,
Hello Gordon, welcome to the Blackbushe Forum!
It was certainly a sunny day when the Red Pelicans arrived for the air show. So far as identifying your Tri-Pacer, no pleasure flights were being conducted in such so far as I recall, our resident blue and white Tr-Pacer was Three Counties Aero Club's example, G-APXP. She joined the fleet early sixties my first sortie in her being September, 1964. She remained on the fleet for some years.
Rob Belcher has been sifting through the Airport's old movement logs, he may well be able to help pin the exact date when the Red Pelicans were with us and any Tri Pace movements that match...
Best wishes, Peter

I am guessing it was one of the Three Counties machines. Probably 4/9/65 and the Three Counties Aeroclub display. Fitting the bill would be APXP, ARKC and ARSW. The airports movement dats doesn't go back that far but I would guess all three might of been on pleasure flying duties that day.

I think the Tri-Pacer in question is indeed G-APXP. I remember that we went to the terminal building prior to the flight and then out to the aircraft. It was just before the start of the display itself. We took off towards Hartney Witney, did a big loop to the north, and landed back again from the camberley end. I seem to remember that the airfield was longer back then, but I was very young. I just remember these 4 (I think) red jets parked in a line. I also remember on another day, driving by the airfield and it being covered in Navy Blue Dragonfly helicopters all parked out on the grass. I lived in Farnborough at the time so I was good at knowing my planes even back then. After your help, I have found a colour photo of G-APXP with "3 counties flying club painted on the rear fuselarge but I don't know how to post it on this page. Does anyone remember the Hawker Seahawk that crashed at Blackbushe ?

So long ago, but RKC was one of the Auster 6A tugs, RSW one of the Piper Colts. I rally cannot recall that we were pleasure flying, but Tri-Pacer PXP would be the most likely candidate. A USAF Dakota and RCAF T-33 were among our display aircraft plus the Red Pelicans. Three Counties put on a demo air race, I flew with Vic Hargreaves in Auster 6 G-ARGB. Fun bit was the final mass dive into the hollow where the Kart track is!! I demonstrated solo taxiing of Terrier G-ARXL back to her tie down on the apron from the static park on 14/32, runway 14/32 was our static park and display line for the flying display. Thus, dear old PXP looks the most likely answer to Gordon's question....

I noted PXP at Blackbushe 9 June 1965.

Just for the record, the much loved 'PXP' sometime back in the sixties....
