THE VICKERS-ARMSTRONG VISCOUNT.
The Viscount, or Viceroy as it was initially named was originally conceived as a result of the Brabazon Committee, a group of aviation experts, who were appointed during WW II by the British Government to look into the post war transport aircraft requirements of the country.
One of their ideas developed into what was to evolve into a very successful British civil airliner - the Vickers Viscount.
In 1946 the Ministry of Supply (MoS) issued specification 8/46 to cover the airliner concept and Vickers - Armstrong were issued with a contract for two V609 prototypes but this contract also specified that the company would finance a third prototype itself.George Edwards ( later Sir George Edwards ) was the Vickers designer of what was to be the worlds first four engined, turbine powered airliner to be used on scheduled services. As the expected lead customer BEAC were regularly consulted regarding their requirements and the aircraft was designed with their close co-operation.
There had, however, been some post war under-estimation of the number of passengers that would need to be carried and 27 was considered to be too low a number to be carried economically on the aircraft. This was to quickly lead to the requirement for a stretched version to cope with the increased passenger demand.
The second prototype VX217 (c/n 2) was modified to be powered by two Tay Turbojets in support of the Vickers Valiant bomber test programme. Ex G-AHRG a V663 series aircraft, the civilian registration was not taken up (NTU). The aircraft didn't make it's first flight until March 15th 1950 and flew at the SBAC Farnborough Airshow later that year. It was leased to Bolton Paul Aircraft who used it for electrically powered flying control trials followed by further leases to Louis Newmark Ltd and the Decca Navigation Company. In 1957 it was returned to the Ministry of Supply at Seighford , Staffordshire. On December 31st 1958 there was a fire in the wheel-bay which burnt through the main spar and the aircraft was damaged beyond repair. Having been withdrawn from the test programme it was scrapped for metal recovery in July 1959.
In the mean time Chief Test Pilot, Mutt Summers took the prototype, (Construction Number 1 (c/n 1), G-AHRF) on it's first test flight from Wisley Airfield in Surrey on July 16th 1948.The aircraft was to make the first scheduled passenger carrying flight between Northolt and Paris Le Bourget on July 29th 1950 following the issue of it's full Certificate of Airworthiness on the 27th of the month. The flight proved a great success.
Rolls-Royce were by this time able to offer a more powerful engine, the new 1250 ehp Mk 503, which enabled a stretched version of the Viscount, known as the V700, to be designed.
On 27th August 1952 G-AHRF was damaged beyond repair when the starboard main undercarriage collapsed while the aircraft was being used for trials of landing and navigation aids in the Sudan. It was reported that the airframe was buried in the desert sand as the success of the V700 series prototype c/n 3 influenced the decision to abandon the earlier model.
BEAC who had previously expressed concerns over the operation of the V 609 aircraft had under pressure from the Government ordered 20 of the 40 seater Airspeed Ambassadors in case the Viscounts proved not to be viable. They were now offered the V700 which would prove more economical with increased wingspan and fuselage length and were also capable of carrying 43 passengers with speed increased. The MoS prototype V700 G-AMAV (c/n 3) flew in late August 1950.
Production of the series V630 was put on hold and the V701 series for BEA commenced production with G-ALWE c/n 4 making it's first flight on 20th August 1952 and appeared at the September 1952 Farnborough Airshow in BEA colours with a 43 seat configuration. A single engined flypast with three engines feathered was made by test pilot Brian Trubshaw which certainly impressed those that witnessed it - me included!
BEA had ordered 20 V701 48/53 passenger configured aircraft in 1950 and this was soon followed by an order from Air France designated the V708 with many more airlines following their lead.
Aer Lingus V707 and Trans Canadian Airlines V724 soon followed and the order book looked very healthy indeed. In all there were to be 287 Viscounts built in the V700 series which was followed by 67 V800 series and a further 84 V810 series.
The 800 series had a shorter range but a higher passenger capacity than the 700's while the 810's were the same size as the 800's but were powered by the Dart R Da 7/1 Mk 225 engine which produced greater power giving a faster speed and longer range than the 800's.
Initially Vickers-Armstrong sold 439 new aircraft to 60 operators making £177 million in the process, but the number of operators increased as second-hand examples came onto the market with aircraft seeing service throughout the world carrying both passengers and freight. Supplies of spare parts and engines proved very lucrative indeed - the aircraft was a winner!
All production versions were powered by the RR Dart engine which was uprated as time passed. Aircraft were built at Wisley, Weybridge and Hurn and I remember seeing a complete bare metal fuselage being transported as an oversize load on a low loader, in the London direction along the A30. It was on the Basingstoke by-pass prior to the M3 being built, en-route Hurn - Wisley perhaps?
The popularity, success and good performance of the Viscount series persuaded Vickers to fund development of the larger Vanguard aircraft.

It should be noted that details shown below are of individual aircraft listed in alphabetical order and the dates they were seen at the airfield. Where dates are shown as a block (i.e 1.2.50-3.4.51) it means that the aircraft was noted on various dates between the opening and closing dates shown and not that the aircraft was present all the time. I have also tried to indicate the reason the aircraft was present, tr = training, ct = training circuits, LHR divn = London Heathrow diversion, ILS tr = Instrument Landing System training, cr = crashed, u/c = undercarriage, c/n = construction number, dam = damaged,
del = delivery, rep = repaired, t/o = take off, flt = flight.
Where nothing follows a date it indicates a normal or scheduled movement.
