I was interested in the identification of the Silver City Airways captain featured in today's POTD. I did remotely wonder if the name "Madeleine"was, in fact correct or not.
The reason I mention this is that some many years ago(early sixties) I was a member of the RAE Gliding Club at Farnborough. Another member, an ATCO at Farnborough, who also held a PPL, was a chap called Ben MADELIN. Ben was also a member of the RAE Aero Club and one particular evening he was flying their Tiger Moth G-AJHS. As luck would have it I scrounged a flight with Ben and, after a bit of local flying he proceeded to do a "beat up". At the tender age of 19 I naturally found it a highly exhilarating experience. On landing I announced to Ben that I was going to apply the following Monday for a Student Pilot's Licence. As they say, I never looked back.
I also understand that Ben had a younger brother who was a Group Captain in the RAF. He died in 2013. His obit from the Guardian:
Just wondering.

It also got me wondering if this was Ben Madelin. Ben was born in 1925 and, I believe, he flew heavy metal before his ATC career. After Farnborough he was posted to the Evaluation Unit at Hurn from where he retired mid-eighties, and came to Lasham Radar thereafter. At that time he flew a Chipmunk, which may have been G-BDDD.
