Roland Beamont the famous pilot in his book 'Testing Years' notes that on this date he (with his first wife Shirley) drove to Hartford Bridge where he had been summoned to a Field Investiture. 'After the ceremony we met King George VI in the Mess with Queen Elizabeth and immediately came under the latter's spell and her supreme ability to make even the most self-conscious enjoy talking to her,'

In the section 'The Way It Was', Page 1, July 12th 194I I note this investiture and the remarkable events leading up to W/Cdr Roland Bemonts attendance. I was lucky enough to receive a personal letter from the W/Cdr recording the events. JSM
