Ah so 'The PB collection'...a great national asset (and I'm being serious) Last 2 years I've spent much time scanning negatives from two 95+ year-old fellows, one Joe Connolly was an Airwork mechanic at Heston, Renfrew, Langley both sides of WWII the other , Les Vowles was with BEA at Northolt and Heathrow (he has some Blackbushe)....they are sworn to Air-Britain use at the moment but 'softly ,softly'.... The Flickr I-DALL photo is also from an older person but uploaded by David Whitworth.. Mick

Hello a30yoyo, Is that the Less Vowles that worked for us at Eagle I think in reservations? He did a number of paintings of Eagle aircraft. Eric

Probably is....he is a well regarded aviation artist and modeller and took a load of high quality 6x6 negatives at Northolt and Heathrow around 1948-1954...a Reading man.. (never met him, scanning arranged through Douglas Rough). The current Air Britain Aeromilitaria features him and some Dak and B-17 photos of his at Northolt which I scanned. The photos by Joe Connolly at Heston pre-war have been in recent A-B Archive mags. I processed and uploaded Brian Doherty's 1950s collection to A-B abpic from scans he sent me... mostly Vikings in b&w '50 shades of grey' (51 to be exact)? www.abpic.co.uk/results.php?q=brian+doherty+blackbushe&fields=all&sort=latest&limit=50and I took a few with my Brownie 127 in 1958 before the quality of Brian Stainers pics seduced me www.abpic.co.uk/results.php?q=m+west+blackbushe&fields=all&sort=latest&limit=20And blow me down ,there might be a part of the PLUNA Viscount late delivery mystery solved there!....my guess , those Herons were turned in (to Eagle) as part payment on Viscount CX-AQP which had lingered in the UK for nearly 2 years after being built

Hello britisheagle and a30yoyo , if that's the same Les Vowles I have an original of his on the wall - a Boston. Very good it is too. Stuart

Thoroughly enjoying your Forum Peter, the aircraft you are posting are of my era (I am 80), they have so much more character than modern jets, not against anything modern by any means, where would we be without laptops, SBS, airbands etc., etc.Well done in starting up the Blackbushe Forum, what with the recent start ups we are spoilt for choice now.

Bless you Sir!! It's feedback like yours that makes life worth living!! As you ask, "Where would we be without today's amazing communications?", well this forum, or the others, would have a hard time getting their messages out, and we wouldn't receive delightful messages like yours.
Blackbushe has done a lot for me over the years, it's my turn to give something back... I agree that modern jets do not have the charisma of aeroplanes that belonged to the "Blackbushe age", but air travel is now for everyone, faster and safer than anyone could have imagined, and so much more affordable compared to years ago. Let's hope that Blackbushe can unlock more of its aviation potential in the future, I'd like to think so!! Who knows?
Thank you Derrick, I'll do my best to bring you some of our past each day...
Warmest regards Peter

In the latest Photo of the Day (16 Feb) Peter notes the loan of a radar from EKCO. Is there any more information about this? I started at Blackbushe in 1965 and I do not believe the radar was there then, although I was assured that radar was abticipated! I wonder who might have operated it? Thanks Bren

Les Vowles also spent some time with East African Airways and was kind enough to loan me a number photographs from that time for my collection of East African aircraft. Never met him but he was very helpful......

I seem to be one of the few who has never heard of, or met, Les Vowles. My sheltered life..
re Controllers query about the EKCO radar at Blackbushe, not much I can say except I managed to spell it wrongly. "Echo", indeed!
The unit was a very temporary affair, just for Farnborough Week. 1962 possibly. I really cannot recall to much as to the motives behind its installation except it was thought that additional air traffic for the week would justify it. I do clearly remember flying in the right hand seat of EKCO's beautiful Avro Anson, G-ALIH, for the calibration flight. Doubly exciting as the RAF's Black Arrows were about to start a rehearsal with their invasion force of sixteen glistening black Hawker Hunters. I'll cover that in a future Photo of the Day.
The mobile radar unit was removed straight after the air show, and I'm not sure if it was actually used. Looked nice though....

Looks like today's BPOTP montage includes a shot of when Concorde came to visit.
I was there that day, and used to have a few (very bad) photos of the event.
Unfortunately I am not able to find them at present, but if I ever do they will make an appearance here.
