The Percival Prince development line.
Starting the line that would eventually lead to the Prince, Sea Prince and Pembroke was the lesser known P48 Merganser. This five-seater which first flew on May 9th, 1947 was powered by 2x Gipsy Queen 296hp engines but when production of these powerplants was not proceeded with Percival's were left with a dilemma and decided to develop the larger P.50 Prince instead.
An Alvis radial engine powered the first prototype to fly on May 13th, 1948 and production of a further 24 aircraft soon followed with small changes being incorporated into various sub marks - mainly uprated engines. This eventually ended up with the Prince 5 being given the name President.
The Sea Prince and Pembroke followed:
Percival produced 4 Sea Prince C.1 for the Royal Navy and a further 42 of the T1 flying classroom version which were followed by 3 C2 light transport aircraft.
The Pembroke C.1 was produced with a longer wing to permit a heavier load to be carried and the first flight of the prototype was made on November 21st, 1952. The type entered service in 1953 as a replacement for the Anson and was fitted with rearward facing seats. It saw service during the Malayan crisis as the C(PR)1 photographic reconnaissance version. From 1953 there was a total of 56 aircraft delivered to the RAF with aircraft being modified from 1970 to extend their service life. The type being finally withdrawn in 1988.
A number of the type were exported to foreign military forces including: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Sudan, Sweden, Malawi, Zambia and Rhodesia which operated two aircraft diverted from the Royal Air Force contract.
