On a snowy afternoon it is time for a look back even further, quite a few Viscounts in today logs. The Viscount was obviously one of the few early post war success stories from the British aircraft industries. It was in a class of its own, with the only competition being from the slower and non pressurized Convairs. It is the only time the likes of Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Aer Lingus, Alitalia, United, MEA etc would operate a British built aircraft. They were pretty much daily Blackbushe visitors through the 50's for training, delivery flights and schedules with Eagle and Airwork. Sadly the British aviation industry never quite topped those dizzy heights of sales.

Good to see some early entries from 1948 in today's list. The early years (pre 1953) on the civil airport was quite quiet. There were only a handful of commercial flights each day as the airlines were banned from operating scheduled flights. Consequently they were restricted to freight flights and passenger charters. G-AJEE was Westminsters first resident aircraft at Blackbushe and is still going strong 70 years later!

Some long distance twins feature today. G-AJAW was operated by Silver City on general charter work from 1947-51 and was the pre war Lockheed 18 civil prototype and served in the US and with BWIA in the Caribbean, it was last heard of in Uruguay in the 70's. ZS-CKW had started life with Williamson Diamond Mines before returning to the Uk in 1959 for re sale. It was a bit of wasted trip as I went back to Africa shortly after and was later written off in Angola in 1969.

Again a small offering today. The Hastings was one of seven converted in to T5's to replace Lincolns at the Bomber Command school. The aircraft were converted to carry the latest target finding radar that was coming in with the V-Bombers. The Hastings served in this role until 1976 with TG517 being retired to the Newark Air Museum where it resides to this day.

Today is actually a historic day as Blackbushe civil airport is actually 70 years old today!! A little extract from 'the book'... The airport finally opened on 15th February, the final RAF personnel leaving on 31st March. There was no opening ceremony, no ribbon cutting and not even a mention in the local newspaper ,the Camberley News. Image a international airport opening without ceremony, or note these days! I doubt if many locals actually noticed, or cared. The RAF had largely departed the previous November, leaving a small section on 'care and maintenance duty'.
Anyway some jottings from a little later in that period. This includes a complete log from 15/2/1958.

here we go again, this day in the 50's, a real mixed bag today. Several Harvards were noted on this day in 57. Grounded Harvards were a familiar sight locally with Skylines of Sandhurst breaking down large amounts for spares. A further highlight was the French Air Force Languedoc. The lnguedoc prototype flew just before the war and it was revived in 1945 and put into production for Air France,LOT, Aviarco and Misir. The type had a short civl career, Viscounts replaced those with Air France, and most ended their days with the French Air Force and Navy, none survived.

Just time for a quick look back. The Marathons were stored in half of the Aviation Servicing (ex Westminster AW, later Eagle) hangar, several more were stored at Lasham. They were fobbed off onto the RAF as navigation trainers but only lasted a few years before being put on the market again. Rob

Busy day today, going to the races. A few visitors on this day in 1960, even with only just over 3 months of life left Blackbushe was still attracting visitors. The WV-2 is likely to have visited at the end of a 12 hour plus patrol over the arctic providing airborne early warning. No doubt the crew were looking forward to some R&R in London.

A real bumper selection from the past today. Particularly a full log from 19/2/56 shows just what the average visit to Blackbushe would unearth, including the few based light aircraft. With twelve Vikings, two Bristol 170 and four Hermes present there must have been more Bristol Hercules engineers around than anything else. Will be good to see one ground running at the airshow, sadly without a viking attached!
