Interesting stuff guys, has always seemed a crying shame that one of those DC-4's didn't make the short trip up the M11 where it could have become a important exhibit. Shame I have never won the lottery! Of course most places just go for the standard 'plastic' Spitfire, or Hurricane gate guard, these normally cost around £30k. A GRP Mosquito would be nicer but don't think anybody has tried that! Of course a nice USN schemed Beech 18 would be colorful. Used to be a 18 at North Weald too. Rob PS perhaps we could just have a life size statue of PB! LOL!

Hah...I assume that is not in connection with the talk of "old airframes"..??
Great idea, cast in bronze, of course!

Going back to this idea. I was passing Booker today and it was rude not to call in. Parkhouse Aviation have a yard there where they seem to collect airframes to save them from the scrap man. They happen to have a B-25 that was originally at the Southend Museum, then Duxford and North Weald. It last flew in 1964 and has pretty much been outside much of the time since so is not in a great state. Would look great in RAF markings, failing that they have the ex Lasham DHA Drover (ex Doug Arnold) or a Meteor.

With all this talk of aircraft, how about the sound of engines. Cannot remember where but recall ground running of engine at air show in past. Any possibility or knowledge of ground running Hercules or Dart or even Merlin perhaps could bring the noise back of old gems if not the aircraft

Thanks rj and aviologist re aged airframes. We're looking at situations where a gate guard might be acquired for duty at Blackbushe some time in the future..no more than that. The B-25 in the markings of ex Hartford Bridge B-25s is thought provoking!
Aviologist, the question of ground running of engines has been addressed. Flying Legends had a number of Merlins running on mounts, and they sounded just like Merlins. Wonderful audio, but one could not help comparing these powerful engineered beasts with a caged lion desperate for freedom... Yes, would love to have them running at the 75th..any contact details would be appreciated.
Appreciate your input chaps!

As a fall back, could you have nostalgic engine sounds over the PA? Might add to the atmosphere when things are not actually airborne.
By the way, do you have/need a commentator? (I can think of a few that would be good, and I know how to contact one of them).

Thanks "Ex", nice idea about the background 'music'... Magic of the Merlin composed by a Rolls Royce, famous for various compositions, his works having migrated to wind instruments with lots of blowing rather than percussion of the pistons. Thank you, we have an ace commentator, but always happy to note a prospective contact!
This thread "Any old airframes?" intended for a look at possible gate guards if/when Blackbushe has a transformation. Civil aircraft only from he who pulls purse strings. Appreciate your suggestions guys..

If it has to be civil then I think you are looking at a Dove or a retired 125 or Lear Jet, although probably easier to source would be a PA31 or Cessna 421. Will give you something to do after the airshow Peter! Rob

Thanks Rob, we'll have to see..much to be done before any gate guard goes on duty.
After the airshow? I'll be sleeping for a month, maybe more..and then who knows? I scouted for DA in remote corners of our planet, maybe time to find the incredible hulk?
Taking a year off air events, possibly....
