THE NEPTUNE
The P2V Neptune was developed by Lockheed's as a maritime patrol aircraft for the US Navy to replace the PV-1 Ventura and PV-2 Harpoon. The first aircraft flew in May 1945 and production commenced in 1946 with the aircraft accepted into service in 1947. Maratime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft required extreme endurance and range to carry out their allocated tasks. They also needed a large internal weapons bay coupled with a defensive capability. The Neptune proved to possess all these attributes. Indeed, in 1946 the type set a world distance record of 11,235 miles non-stop and un-refuelled flight between Perth, Australia and Columbus, Ohio, USA.
The type was used extensively in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War and variants were used throughout the world in many various rolls. Airborne early warning, Nuclear Weapons carrier, VIP transport, Special sensor aircraft, Drone control,
Ski-plane in Antarctica, Crew trainer, Electronic surveillance, Target tug and Gunship were all duties undertaken. Quite a list!
As a frequent visitor to the U.S Navy facility at Blackbushe during the 1950's and early '60's various marks appeared with the P2V-F model being unusual as it was fitted with both piston and jet engines. These aircraft did not require the usual Avtur to power the jets but used the normal 115-145 Avgas as used in the aircraft piston engines. The aircraft used the jet engines for safety on take off but would shut them down once a safe altitude was reached. They were also kept at flight idle if the aircraft was at low altitude during anti-shipping or anti-submarine operations in case there was a problem with the piston engines.

Prior to the introduction of the P-3 Orion in the mid 60's the Neptune was the primary US Navy land-based anti-submarine patrol aircraft. As part of a "hunter killer" group the aircraft used advanced aids to locate the target and then called in destroyers to attack it.
A number of the aircraft passing through Blackbushe were believed to be positioning to carry out covert operations in the Baltic area.
The Neptune was operated by a number of Air Forces / Navies worldwide, including the RAF who operated
52 P2V-5's designated as the Neptune MR.1 between 1952 and 1957 until the introduction of the Avro Shackleton.
