You know what I had completely forgot about this. I shall have to dig out the old log book again. Come winter I will have plenty of spare time for such activities. Currently writing captions for about 180 photos for 'the book'. Have some nice new color shots and some that you are familiar with from Peters collection. New color includes Airwork Hermes, Eagle Viscount, Dan Air York so good it could have been taken yesterday, Independant DC-4, Channel Air Bridge B170, Falcon Hermes taken in Tokoyo(!), Eagle Viking in deepest Africa and loads of new B7W.

Although its not quite winter yet I am 'working' from home today. So back to G-AIKR and 1953. September was spent on Instrument rating renewalls from/to Blackbushe involving names such as Rose, Mc Cash, Woodrow, Skinner and Twomey. It likely that these pilots all had plenty of hour is aircraft more warlike that the Consul. IKR next left the confines of Blackbushe on 20/11/53 departing at 12:55 on the 40 min flight to Filton with 'i/f practice' in the nature of flight coulomb. The aircraft returned in the darkness of a winters evening at 17:05. There were further training sorties with captains Mc Cash and Rose from 20/11-2/12. On this day Capt Woolfe flew to Bembridge at 11:20, departing again at 16:50. Nothing in the remarks coloum but down if it was for fish and chips! December 11,17,22,29 and January 3,6,8,18, February 8,23,26, March 1,2,10,11,24 all saw local training flights of between 35 minutes and 1 hour 15. on 16/3/53 Captain Rose departed for Stansted at 10:25, arriving at 11:00,a nd returned 30 min later. I wonder how long you would have to hold to make that flight today? With the coming of spring IKR made several less tedious trips than this. On 1/4/54 it departed at 13:05 for the hours flight to Elmdon with Captain Harding, F/O Lovett and Air Hostess Ellis. It departed Elmdon at 15:10 and took 1h50 to reach Deauville. After a quick turnaround it departed back home at 17:35, arriving at 18:55. Presumably a passenger charter? On the 9/4 it returned to Deauville on flight 'FJ603', it routed BB 0955-Deauvulle 11:05, deauville dept 14:45 arriving BB 15:30. It then went to Stansted and back in the evening, a total of 3h30 flying time. On 17/4 it repeated its Blackbushe-Deauville-Elmdon-Blackbushe trip as 'FJ608' These FJ flight numbers seem to have been introduced for customs flights, although how Airwork works out as FJ I don't know. Much more to come.

Ok long time over due look at the log book
24/4/53 some local instrument flying with Capt Stenner checking out McKeluie and Holland. This continued on 28/4,29/4,4/5 with SBA straining ( a form of ILS). On 6/5/53 Capt Lacy departed to gatwick at 13:40 to pick up spares returning at 14:50 after 15 min on the ground at gatwick. On 8/5/53 there were four local flights on instrument rating renewals of Burke, Twomey, and Harding piloted by capt Lacy. These flights continued until 5/6 averaging two per day. The next time IKR left the local area was 8/6/53 when Capt harding and FO McCash departed at 08:35 on the hours flight to Ipswich on flight FJ488. They departed Ipswich at 09:40 to Hawarden arriving at 11:15, after a 30min stop they departed for home arriving at 12:50. The final flight in this period was on 16/6/53 when there was a local flight for SBA training. It looks like the aircraft then wen't into heavy maintenance until September? Coming up the bright lights of Deauville, Croydon and Sywell!

Hello Rob, Very interesting the log book for G-AIKR.A number of the names mentioned ended up working for Eagle as captains, Capt.W McCash, Capt.V Twomey, Capt. T Burke. All stayed to the end of Eagle and sadly no longer with us. Eric

Hi Eris thats interesting to know, obviously the best crew ended up at eagle. I had not really taken much notice of the names, but will do so from now on. Anyway back to the 50's.. looks like IKR came out of maintenance during July/August with a flight on 2/9/53 with Phillips and Burke making two locals that day. On 6/9 messers Head and Riley escaped the farnborough week madness at 09:54 on flight FJ523 to Deauville which was reached in 1h10. They returned to base at 14:30 before a 35 min flight to Sywell at 15:10 and returned home at 16:40. On 7/9 Winsland and Rose departed at 1505 and flew Blackbushe-Croydon-Deauville-Blackbushe on FJ253. The 9th and 10th saw several IR renewals by Capt Stenner of Seley, Woodrow, Phillips and a couple I can't read. Then on 19/9 Riley and Rose departed at 09:30 to Wattisham on FS528 and did two local flights from Wattisham of 1h20 and 2h35, before returning at 20:55, no idea the reason behind this. October and November 1953 saw a series of locals on GCA training, IR renewals and the like. Involved were capt Rose, McCash, D.Williams, Harding and Winsland, and those being checked out were Clifford, Mc Cash, Twomey, Burke, Knowles, Rose, Mc Murchy Winsland. This takes us up to December 1953....

Good to see Croydon get a mention in the log entry 7/9/53. In 1952 it was decided that Croydon would close - allegedly too much housing 'surrounding' the airport (I think one can deduce the shadow intention!). Northolt and Blackbushe were to take over the European flights during the '50s. During this period LAP and Gatwick were being developed with ardour, the former, like Croydon, enclosed by housing! Reading between the lines: the death knell was already ringing for Blackbushe in the early 50s. It is remarkable how the Bushe survived, albeit in a somewhat smaller state - thank heavens some people had 'faith'. Croydon 'officially' closed 30 September 1959 to be replaced by the Roundshaw estate!

By special request 1/12/53 saw three local night flying sorties with Mc cash, Rose and McMurchy. The 2nd saw a trip to Bembridge departing at 10:20 and returning at 17:40. The rest of December saw local trips by Harding, taylor,Leaning, E.W Williams and Mc Murchy on local training flights, the final one being on 29/12. January 3rd and 18th saw locals too. Then a spot of maintenace with a airtest on 8/2 by Capt Harding with Pence. The locals flights continue through February with long breaks. It is not until 11/3/34 that IKR left Blackbushe, this time for Hurn with capt Riley and FO Seveton(?) on a training flight. On 16/3/54 a similar flight was undertaken to Stansted with Capt Rose and F/O Dunn. Finally in April some real action. A Blackbushe-Elmdon-Deauville-Elmdon-Blackbushe charter with cap harding, R/O Lovett, and 'A/H' Ellis (what is a A/h?). On the 9th Capt Sorlry(?) departed for Deauville at 09:55 returned at 1553 before routing to Stansted at 16:20 and returning from there at 17:35 in a total of 3h 40 flying on flight FJ603, in comments is '07 sore'. Sadly the handwriting is sometimes not easy to read!
