Thank you for the photo of G-ATSM with yours truly aft of the prop and dressed immaculately. For some reason Pete and I decided to come to work in jacket and tie with polished shoes for a while. Bit over the top for the ground control hut and the fog of cigarette smoke inside. 1966/67 I think.

We must have met. I worked in the tower briefly in 1966/67 until Bennett got upset with me!!! Best regards Brendan McCartney

Indeed we must have, Brendan. I can only remember Mike Sheehey and a Canadian up there. The access ladder being a bit discouraging to visitors. I have a few photos in the loft somewhere which I must dig out.

The access ladder being a bit discouraging to visitors. Especially when someone was standing on the trapdoor at the top!!

"Happy Days" stirs many a memory, including Reg's trap door! Entry to the "temporary" Tower via this rather cunning piece of carpentry held surprises for both parties.... If you were ascending the weight of persons standing on the door would at least result in giving you a sprained wrist as it refused to budge - or concussion should you have been ascending at too great a speed! Standing on the upper side of the trap door was equally disconcerting as the level of 'ejection seat' simulation was dependent on your weight and the inertia of the ascendant.. Holding a drink while standing atop the trap was not advised unless you detected the thumps of someone approaching from below giving you time to step aside..
The Tower held many memories from its construction to its end, but were we sad to see it go? Nope....

Just noticed that I am in the foreground of the header pic with the Argosy. I marshalled that beast to where it is on the previous day, I guess, as we wore white boiler suits for that day. No ear defenders. I’m surprised that I can still hear.

Hello mustangp51.. Great to still have you 'in the picture' as it were... The Daily Telegraph sponsored St John's Air Display and National Sky Diving Championships. The first time an event of this size had taken place on Blackbushe soil. Sadly we have lost some of the characters who played their roles in supporting Blackbushe in those not always easy days.. happily the Airport has made it through to what looks like far better times to come. Such a shame we cannot celebrate the fact with everyone from those early days who also wanted no more than to see Blackbushe survive as an airport.
Good to hear from you!

An added bonus for me was yesterday when I flew into Heathrow from Nice and there on the port wing was the Bushe clear as a bell. Brought back happy memories.
