Austers and Taylorcraft.
Two Taylor brothers from Nottingham in England set up a company 'Taylor Brothers Aircraft Corporation' in 1926 in Rochester,New York. Following the death in a flying accident of his brother, Clarence Gilbert Taylor a self-taught aeronautical engineer became known as the father of private aviation in the USA. Using the slogan "Buy your aircraft Taylor made" he designed the original Taylor Chummy which did not sell well and then moved on to produce the Taylor Cub from new hangar premises in Bradford, Pennsylvania. The company was sold to one of the investors a William Thomas Piper (thus the Piper Cub) and in 1939 Taylor formed another company 'Taylorcraft Aviation Corporation'.
During WWII the Taylorcraft DCVO-65 model and the Piper Cub served alongside each other with the United States Army Air Force in the training, liaison and observation roles.
Taylorcraft Aeroplanes (England) Ltd a subsidiary based at Thurmaston in Leicester, England developed the Taylorcraft Model D and Auster Mk.1 through to to the Mk.5 which formed the backbone for the British AOP (Air Observation Post) and three Canadian AOP squadrons.
The head office and drawing office were located in a large house on the outskirts of Thurmaston with the aircraft being manufactured at Syston with final assembly and testing taking place at Reasby aerodrome also in Leicestershire.
The name changed to Auster on March 7th, 1946. All the Auster variants had evolved from the early Taylorcraft models and even after the company was merged into Beagle Aircraft in 1961 the Beagle Terrier was produced and looked very similar to the earlier Taylorcraft and Auster types.
