The Beech 18 and variants at Blackbushe.
In all there were 19 different versions of the Beech 18 produced. I have listed below in the variants section only the versions that were noted as being seen at Blackbushe during the period up to 1960.
This twin engined, low winged, tail wheeled light trainer and utility aircraft was produced continuously for over 32 years between 1937 and 1969 with over 9,000 being built in various variants. The first flight took place on January 15th 1937 with the aircraft type initially being introduced for service later that year. Dubbed the Beech Model 18 the design included a semi-monocoque construction with fabric covered control surfaces, a tail wheel and twin tailfins. Throughout it's production history many modifications were incorporated, including to improve speed and load carrying in early production aircraft and changes to the engine types fitted.
Various later models followed with the E18S available from 1955 which incorporated a 6 inch (150mm) extension to the fuselage with more headroom in the passenger cabin. The final model produced was the model H18 introduced in 1963 which could be supplied with an optional tricycle undercarriage of which 109 airframes were built with many earlier aircraft being modified to the same standard. A Volpar turbo prop conversion was also made available for fitting to the tricycle gear model. The final production aircraft an H18 was supplied to Japan Airlines in 1970.
Primary military users were the United States Army Air Force, the United States Navy, the Royal Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force.
During and after World War II 4500 plus of the aircraft type were in military service being used, in addition to their primary role, for training aircrew in bombing, navigation, gunnery, as a light bomber and for photo-reconnaissance. An additional role was to maintain currency of flying licenses for ground based personnel stationed at bases around the world including at US Navy Base Blackbushe.
It was a common sight back in my early days at the airport in the late 1950's to see the bright red and white highly polished SNB-5 aircraft flying in the circuit with their associated distinctive engine note, as the US Navy ground personnel enjoyed their chance to leave the Blackbushe tarmac and reach into the wide open spaces above. The sight of those brightly painted aircraft pounding the circuit with the sun glinting on them is something that I vividly recall to this day.
