Absolutely fascinating, thanks Rob - as you say it's interesting to see which old airport roads Vigo Lane now sits on.
Interesting to see also that on that edition of the map chosen, Farnborough is without hard runways, and Heatrhrow looks rather bare, too!

Hi looking at the MoD airfields, including Lasham and Odiham the runways etc are not shown. This was the era of no photography at battle of Britian displays so there was alot of security paranoia.

Yes, I think its quite likely down to security issues. Back in the 80's my very first job was as a field surveyor with the Ordnance Survey. Many military and other "secret" establishments were shown on the published maps as a boundary line only, with no other detail shown. The buildings were surveyed, but just not put on published maps. Google Street View made a mockery of that approach, so I don't think that's part of the spec any more. As it was, it doesn't look as though it applied to all map series anyway (look for Wandsworth Prison on the same map as your original link and there it is, in all its glory when I know for a fact that some prisons were not shown) but it certainly was evident on some printed output of the OS.
