Hi Bob I have a friend who was a fitter on javelins at Odiham after being on Vampires in Germany. He always said the Javelin was a challenge after the Vampire. Sadly one of those types that retired before I had a chance to see one.
The VT789 Youngman-barnes High lift was a converted Proctor with an experimental wing. After RAE trials it arrived to be civilianized as G-AMBL by Aviation servicing. It was later retired to the Cranfield Institute in 1954. Just a thought for the poor old crew of G-AMWB cruising to Algeria at 160mph over the 1000 miles!

Quite a few light aircraft noted on this day in the past. Blackbushe was not the best place for the student pilot what with heavies in the circuit, although a few were based. The early month of 1960 actually attracted quite a few , probably trying to get Blackbushe in their logbooks before it dissapeared? Little did they know.... 21/03/1957 56514 Douglas R5D-3 10741 US Navy VR-24 coded RD 21/03/1957 138794 Lockheed WV-3 4381 US Navy coded TH-3 VW-4 21/03/1957 G-ALBA DH Rapide 6821 Airviews 21/03/1957 G-AOHJ Vickers Viscount 159 BEA 21/03/1958 127750 Lockheed P2V-5F 526-5084 US Navy coded LH-12 VP-21 21/03/1958 G-ALWF Vickers Viscount 5 BEA, burst tyre on landing 21/03/1958 G-AODG Vickers Viscount 77 Airwork 21/03/1958 G-AOXV Vickers Viscount 248 Transair 21/03/1958 VR380 Bristol 170 12733 Eagle ex G-AGUT being scraped 21/03/1959 1527 Beech 3TM CA-127 Royal Canadian Air Force 21/03/1959 17108 Douglas R4D-8 43369 US Navy ex FASRON200 to USA 21/03/1959 21588 Canadair T-33 T33-588 Royal Canadian Air Force 1st Air Division 21/03/1959 50808 Douglas R4D-8 43394 US Navy FASRON 104 coded FK 21/03/1959 43-15204 Douglas VC-47 19670 USAF NAMA Europe 21/03/1959 G-ALAI Miles Messenger 6348 Sky Flying Group 21/03/1959 G-ALDH HP Hermes HP.81/9 Skyways 21/03/1959 G-ALDO HP Hermes HP.81/16 Airwork Ltd, Scrapped northside 21/03/1959 G-AMOI Vickers Viscount 22 BEA crew training 21/03/1959 G-AOTM DHC Chipmunk 22 CI/0862 Bristo Aeroplane Co 21/03/1959 G-APDA DH Comet 4 6401 BOAC crew training 21/03/1959 VX598 Westland Dragonfly HR1 WA/H/013 Royal Navy coded 29 21/03/1959 WJ893 Vickers Varsity T1 RAF Cranwell coded NX 21/03/1960 56486 Douglas R5D-3 10584 US Navy, coded 7F, Oakland. 21/03/1960 G-AIBN DH Tiger Moth 84320 Marshalls Flying Services 21/03/1960 G-ALTW DH Tiger Moth 84177 Marshalls Flying Services

Another day in the past of noisy crew training. I doubt the local residents were concerned if the Comet 4 was noisier than the Mk1 or not! There were only a tiny number Comet 4 visits compared with the time the Mk1's based the circuit, the Pan-Am DC-6 must have been silent in copresent!

Apologies for being late on parade, yesterday was a very busy day and I did not get round to it. You may be assured that the wife will supervising field punishment in the garden as a result LOL! Some more RAE movements on this day in 1949 and 1951. The RAE Dominies often seemed to drop in while en route to Farnborough but have never worked out why? I is hardly a long journey by road and I am not aware of the RAE having an outstation here?

Good morning on this sunny mothers day. A few blasts from the past today. The main log is a full one from this day in 1960, just over nine weeks before it would close as an airport, seemingly forever. The place was still busy with civil, and military flights, although Eagle's presence was much reduced, and there was little in the way of passenger flights at that time. I truly believe that if Blackbushe could have survived that 1960-65 period it would still be a commercial airport today. Sadly short-sighted (aren't they always?) politicians robbed the country of a perfectly serviceable airport to serve the massively expanding holiday charter market that could be easily developed. If only they had spent a fraction of the sort of taxpayers money spent on the inefficient, loss-making, nationalized industries on Blackbushe then the southeast would have had a convenient, efficient, well-connected airport to absorb the growth. Of course what happened is that Luton council took the long term view and developed their airport, even though it was built in a stupid place! Anyway, I'm off to catch the William Dempster Tudor to Johannesburg! 26/03/1950 G-AJAV Douglas DC-3 12386 Silver City

The Beaufighter delivery comes from Richard badger, an early British Aviation services radio operator. After a tour of Bomber Command, he was employed at £500pa in 1947. Turkey was gifted loads of Spitfires, Tiger Moths, Mosquitos and 23 Beaufighters. The Mosquitos were often delivered directly from the factory at Ringway, some came through Blackbushe. The spitfires came from RAF maintenance units and needed some work first, the Tiger Moths went by sea. The Beaufighters all came from Filton and cleared customs at Blackbushe before delivery.

A trio of Army Air Corps Austers visited on this day in 1959.The AAC was only formed in 1957 but was to be a regular at Blackbushe into the 1980's. Being so close to so many army units the AAC found Blackbushe very handy. If it had not been due to lack of funds Blackbushe may well have been an AAC base to this day. The AAC enquired in 1960 on whether the base was available for full-time AAC use. Another inquiry came from Lasham Gliding Club! Can you imagine gliding so close to the London TMA and Farnborough? The Supermarine Attacker is of interest, it was on it's way to Abbotsinch for storage, and disposal to the scrap man the following year. 29/03/1947 G-AJGH Airspeed Consul 5124 Britavia, delivery
