ok back 'on the mission'. Quite a few USAF 'daks' visited on this day in the 50's. Like RAF Ansons, USAF Daks were liberally sprinkled through Europe in the 40's-60's. MAAG London was the Military Aviation Advisory Group and based at Northolt. The MAAG had daks in all European capitals as well as many Embassy's having them. There were also plenty of Daks attached to USAF stations. They mostly came to Blackbushe at weekends when Northolt, and Bovingdon were closed. Having the USN on site helped with attracting these.

On this day in 1949 the DH108 completed whatever it had been here for over the last few days. There is a bumper lot of crew training, imagine the clamor of seeing a Connie in the circuit on a lovely spring afternoon like today, we can but dream!

A bumper list from this day in 1957. The four Harvards used to make FS881 good for the Lebanese AF, FX442 is supposed to be still around having passed through several museums. I assume that these were part of the lot held at Skylines Sandhurst ??

Halfway through the month already, where did it go? Auster G-AJEE was one of the airports first civil residents, being Westminsters hack aircraft. It joined Westminster in May 47, just before they moved to Blackbushe. Following Westminsters demise it was sold in March 1950, and went through over a dozen private owners without accident and is now based in the Manchester area and has been seen at Popham Auster fly-ins several times recently. 15/03/1948 G-AJEE Auster J1 2309 Westminster Airways to Dunsfold 14:45

Short list today but some nice heavy metal. Comets would have been common at the time. Info came from a logbook from a training captain held at the BA archives. G-ALYR was w/o at Calcutta a few months later. The aircraft ran off the taxiway and applying full power damaged the under carriage. Presumably the groundings a little later meant it was not worth repairing? The Air India was presumably a LHR diversion, or a charter? The aircraft was passed to the Indian AF, then the Navy, before being broken up in the 80's.

Strangely some real RAF heavy metal on this day in 1957 and 1958. No idea for the reasons but RAF aircraft were regular visitors. Back in the day, it was normal for Officers to 'borrow' aircraft and take it away for the weekend! This was particularly evident with those in RAF Germany fancying a weekend at home. Of course, Blackbushe was open 24/7, unlike the RAF bases so the weekenders could fly back on Sunday evening. Interestingly a few years ago an RAF Hawk would do something similar many weekends at Odiham, returning to valley on Monday mornings!

Thanks Rob.
Interesting to note the Krupp D-CAFU 17/3/57 - I believe Krupp, together with another, are making lifts these days - amongst other things.
On a different vein: thank goodness we now have greater control over the public purse!!??

Rocky Krupps are one of those German companies that did rather well post war! The best quote I have heard about them was when the RAF were leaflet bombing Germany in the phony war an MP suggested bombing Krupps but it was ruled out as it was a private company, LOL! Back on this day in 1956 the bushe housed 26 large propliners, a full log for that day. Plus a jet trainer, and the lovely Silver City DH Dragonfly, a real Gentlemen's aerial carriage. Today's list includes the first log from the airports opening months in 1947. Airwork held an open day that was reported in 'The Aeroplane Spotter' magazine at the time. This was to showcase those aircraft available for charter and to show off their facilities. The report stated that the weather was poor and several expected aircraft could not attend, bit like the weather 70 years later then! The 1960 log shows how busy the place was with only weeks until closure. Maybe the operators could just not believe a perfectly serviceable airport could be closed just like that?

B170 Nice to see the two Javelins mentioned on the 17th March, they were both serving the 46 Squadron at RAF Odiham until mid 1957 when they were replaced by Mark 2 Javelin. Most of the Mark 1's from 46 Squadron were flown out to Germany to RAF Bruggen Germany to 87 Squadron to replace their Meteor NF11. Including the two that landed at Blackbushe. As I was stationed at Bruggen on 87 Squadron I had the good fortune to get a flight in XA628 before I was demobbed at the end of March 1958. It is a much different flight to being in a Bristol Freighter. Yours Bob Carter.
